Germans are a little bit strange, sometimes.
Look at me and you’ll know what I’m talking about ;-)

As you can read in the newspapers these days, almost everybody is hysteric about the funny Google Streetview Opel Astra cars with the 360 degree camera mount on their roof. Reason for people’s Angst is that they are afraid that someone else might see their frontyard through Streetview (or if their house maybe need some new paint…)

It’s been some time since my last blog post.
My last couple of months were very exciting. I’ve changed my job, my new employer is GIS mbh in Hannover, a small company that is very focused on Collaboration and Information Management technologies. And there was some travelling – personal and business trips – involved in the last weeks.

So I just wanted to take the opportunity to say “Sorry” for being kinda inactive during the last time. And I promise to post more in the future.
There’s already some blog posts in the queue that will be published soon. :-)

I had an interesting discussion with an IBM software architect last days.
Since the acquisition of Cognos, IBM is bringing up fancy new ideas and methodologies that might help companies to automatically forecast different business numbers and figures. IBM uses really smart algorithms that take the existing numbers and figures to estimate their future development.
I was talking to one of their leading mathematicians last week to understand what’s behind all this. Since I have just a degree in information science I am probably some kind of fool for these mathematician guys, but I think I got the very basics.
They call this New Intelligence.

After testing some features of the Amazon Cloud EC2 a couple of weeks ago, I want to taste a piece of Microsoft’s cloud cake today. Microsoft call their cloud offering “Microsoft Azure”, which reminds me of some nice days at the Cote d’Azur some years ago… but that’s a different story ;-)
Let’s take a look if the sun is really shining on “Microsoft Azure”

How did they change since stone age?
Not much, obviously… ;-)

Heute mal was Praktisches:

The IT business is a world of 3-letter acronyms.
Since 1996 I am working in the software business, basically in development projects dealing with the generation, transformation and storage of company informations. During the last 10 years a lot of acronyms passed my way like EAI (Enterprise Application Integration), MDM (Master Data Management), SOA (Service Oriented Architecture), OCR (Optical Character Recognition), DMS (Document Management System), BPM (Business Process Management) and – of course – ECM (Enterprise Content Management).
Just to mention a few…

Since Cloud Computing is some sort of upcoming hype, I wanna take a look what’s really behind the curtain and how the different cloud providers built their offerings from a technical perspective.

I’ve spent my last weekend to start with Amazon’s Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2). To have a real-life experience, I installed some IBM software on the cloud instance in a way, that might be similar to a production or test environment in a project situation.

When you read computer magazines these days, “Cloud Computing” is a repititive term. Knowing that companies like IBM, Microsoft, Amazon and Google are currently doing high investments to establish their cloud businesses, I was curious what’s really under the hood.

  • Is Cloud Computing just another buzzword like SOA was?
  • Is Cloud Computing actually the same as ASP (Application Service Providing), just with a new marketing story?
  • And what is all behind the cloud from a technical perspective?

Well, let me just share some of my thoughts.
